Taiwan became the first country in Asia to legalize same-sex marriages on May17 when the Legislative Yuan passed a law that allows homosexual couples to register their marriage and enjoy similar rights as heterosexual couples. The law went into effect on May 24. As a result, many couples are getting married and registering their marriages. We spoke to one couple, Kristin Huang and Amber Wang, who recently held a joint wedding with a gay male couple and a heterosexual couple to show that everyone has the right to get married. They will register their marriage in Taipei on Friday. They shared with CNA their journey of self-acceptance, what it’s like to be gay in Taiwan and how they feel about being able to get married legally.
