In late May, Taiwan’s National Immigration Agency uncovered a human trafficking scheme in which a broker in Vietnam charged several thousand US dollars each to help 17 Vietnamese minors immigrate to Taiwan using fake birth certificates describing them as the children of Vietnamese women married to Taiwanese men here. The agency says the youngsters were brought here in the last two years, mainly to help out in tea farms and so that they can have a better life. They are mostly relatives of the women. Three of the minors have been sent back to Vietnam and three others were stopped from entering Taiwan once the authorities discovered the scheme. But 11 others remain here. The authorities are trying to find the best way to deal with the matter.
