Did China cause the loss of Taiwan’s ally?

Taiwan is considered by China as one of its provinces, taken by Japan after the First Sino-Japanese War in 1895 and then separated from the mainland at the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949. The Republic of China is not recognized as a country by the United Nations and has only a few formal diplomatic allies. Now it has lost one of those allies – Sao Tome and Principe.
