In April, gymnast Lee Chih-kai (李智凱) secured a berth in this year's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, making him the first Taiwanese gymnast to qualify for the Summer Games in 16 years.

Lee, who just turned 20 in April, may not be widely known, but some might recognize him from the 2005 documentary "Jump! Boys," which tells the story of Lee and other members of the gymnastics team of Gong Jheng Elementary School in Yilan.

Looking back at the film, Lee said he felt it was fun and that gymnastics training had helped him truly understand what hardship is.

Though thoughts of giving up have crossed his mind, Lee said he has stuck with the sport and his coach since elementary school because he has been on this path for so long.

"(I'm) really happy to qualify for the Olympics. I'm really looking forward to it. I want to see what the Olympic arena is like," he said.
