Taipei, Nov. 13 (CNA) Futex Taipei 2019, an annual high-tech trade fair, will open on Dec. 5 and showcase the innovations that Taiwan hopes will help it assume leadership positions in future technologies.

Futex Taipei 2019, organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) and renamed from Future Tech 2019, will be held at the Taipei World Trade Center from Dec. 5 to 8, the ministry said.

Speaking at a news conference Tuesday, Science and Technology Minister Chen Liang-gee (陳良基) said the show is aimed at exhibiting the advances made by leading academics and laboratories that will help Taiwan remain a leader in innovation and boost its competitive edge.

Chen said over 100 technologies are on display at the show, and Taiwan has the potential to be a leader in several of them, from the Artificial Intelligence of Things and biotech to smart machinery and new materials.

These technologies will surely attract overseas visitors and help secure partnerships with global players to give them greater exposure around the world, Chen said.

About 100,000 visitors are expected to attend the show, according to the MOST.

The ministry said, meanwhile, that advanced space technology will also be on display at the trade fair, with a team from National Central University exhibiting a small-sized ionosonde -- a special type of radar used to examine the ionosphere.

The device represents Taiwan's strength in electronics and precision machinery development and should help strengthen the country's visibility in the space technology field, the ministry said.
