Chunghwa Telecom's new iPhone reservations full in 8 minutes

Taipei, Sept. 13 (CNA) Online reservations launched by Chunghwa Telecom Co., one of Taiwan's largest telecom services providers, for a limited supply of the newest iPhones, were full in just eight minutes after the campaign began Thursday.

Chunghwa Telecom said that soon after the online reservations for the new iPhone 11 series started at 3 p.m. Thursday, more than 10,000 potential buyers logged onto the telecom operator's website.

According to Chunghwa Telecom, the higher-end iPhone 11 Pro Max 256G and iPhone 11 Pro 256GB models are the most popular, in particular the version in midnight green. It was the first time for Apple to introduce such a color to its iPhones.

As for the more affordable iPhone 11 model, the telecom operator said, more than 30 percent of the consumers chose the 128GB model with purple and green the most popular colors.

On Sept. 10, Apple unveiled the new iPhones: two high-end models -- the iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max -- along with the cheaper iPhone 11 -- to replace the previous models of the iPhone XS, XS Max and XR, respectively.

Apple will launch global sales for the new iPhones Sept. 20 after a pre-order sale is scheduled for Friday. Taiwan is one of the markets to be included in the first round of the global sales.

The 5.8-inch Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED) iPhone 11 Pro, featuring Apple's new triple camera lenses, carries a starting price of NT$35,900 (US$1,151), while the 6.5-inch OLED iPhone 11 Pro Max model has a starting price of NT$39,900, according to Apple's Taiwan official website. The 6.1-inch LCD iPhone 11 will start at NT$24,900, NT$2,000 cheaper than its predecessor, the iPhone XR.

The iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max will be offered in midnight green, silver, space gray and gold, while the iPhone 11 will be available in purple, yellow, green, black, white and red.

Chunghwa Telecom and two of its major competitors in Taiwan -- Taiwan Mobile Co. and Far EasTone Telecommunications Co. -- have introduced similar monthly programs for the new iPhones.

For example, consumers who pay a NT$999 monthly fee on a 36-month program will spend NT$24,300 for an iPhone 11 Pro 64GB, while consumers pay NT$13,300 for an iPhone 11 64GB on a 36-month program of NT$999 per month.

Meanwhile, Taiwan Star Telecom Corp. has launched a similar program, while the company has also introduced a trade-in program in which a lucky draw will allow one of every four consumers to get a free iPhone 11.

For its part, Asia Pacific Telecom Co., another smaller telecom operator in Taiwan, has unveiled a 36-month program in which consumers will have to pay only NT$8,900 for an iPhone 11 64GB with a monthly fee of NT$888, but will enjoy a 50 percent discount on the monthly fees in the first three months.

In addition, Asia Pacific Telecom has another program to allow consumers to get a free iPhone 11 256GB in a limited supply by agreeing to pay a monthly fee of NT$999 for 30 months.
