Oath/Yahoo to set up Asia-Pacific R&D center in Taiwan

Taipei, July 27 (CNA) Oath Inc., which owns digital content subdivisions AOL and Yahoo, announced Friday that it will set up an Asia-Pacific research and development (R&D) center in Taiwan.

Atte Lahtiranta, the chief technology officer of Oath who is currently visiting Taiwan, said his company has decided to locate the regional R&D center in Taiwan because of its first-tier talent pool and its product development capability.

Taiwan is also good at educating and training high-tech manpower and is highly competitive in technological innovation and upgrading, both keys to Oath's global development strategy, Lahtiranta said.

Kelly Hirano, vice president of Oath's media engineering department, said the R&D center in Taiwan will be responsible for setting trends for new products, optimizing the user experience locally, and connecting local and global markets.

Oath/Yahoo is expected to recruit some 100 AI engineers, software programmers, product designers and product managers in the third quarter to meet their need for high-tech talent to devise new products.

They will be in charge of developing mobile, audiovisual, and e-commerce platforms in the region and localizing global products in regional markets to drive the number of Oath users to 2 billion by 2020.

Currently Oath has six self-developed apps in Taiwan that include the tw.buy.yahoo.com app, the tw.bid.yahoo.com app and tw.esports.yahoo. com. app, boosting the value of transactions on mobile devices to 50 percent of the company's total in the local market.

Yahoo TV will be the first product put forth by the Oath/Yahoo R&D center, eyeing the strong growth potential for short videos among youth in the region, according to Oath, which itself is a subsidiary of Verizon Communications.
