HTC, China Mobile sign 5G technology partnership pact

Taipei, June 28 (CNA) Taiwan-based smartphone brand HTC Corp. and China Mobile Communications Corp. announced Thursday the signing of an agreement on joint partnership to accelerate the proliferation of 5G technology infrastructure and devices in China.

The "5G Device Forerunner Initiative" was established during Mobile World Congress Shanghai 2018 (MWC Shanghai) that day, the biggest mobile event in Asia that began a day earlier and will run through Friday.

China Mobile, the largest telecom operator in China, will in return help HTC promote and expand its virtual reality (VR) devices in the Chinese retail market, according to the Taiwanese firm.

The partnership will help accelerate the widespread adoption of VR and augmented reality (AR) technologies in the country, and at the same time propel the development of newly enabled application models leading up to the widespread commercialization of 5G networks by 2020, HTC said.

HTC Chairwoman Cher Wang (王雪紅), who received the Outstanding Contribution to the Asian Mobile Industry award from the GSM Association (GSMA) at the three-day event, said the arrival of 5G will help expand the application fields of VR and AR in the future.

Speaking about the award, Wang said HTC was able to take advantage of shifts in the device industry caused by the advent of 3G and 4G, and that the company will continue to aim for breakthrough innovations and to bring more immersive and interactive technologies for the masses.
