Vice President Chen touts opportunities in Taiwan's ICT industry

Taipei, June 5 (CNA) Taiwan, as a sci-tech island, has plenty of business opportunities in the information and communication technology sector, Vice President Chen Chien-jen (陳建仁) said Tuesday at the opening of 2018 Computex Taipei, the largest ICT trade show in Asia.

Chen said Taiwan's achievements in developing smart home applications and solutions have made it a major platform for foreign enterprises seeking investment opportunities and for young people looking to start their own businesses in the ICT industry.

The government has launched the Asian Silicon Valley Development Plan to improve the business environment for technology innovations and startups and has laid out an ambitious plan to spend NT$16 billion (US$545.6 million) to beef up the domestic artificial intelligence (AI) industry, Chen said.

He said the government will continue to promote the ICT industry by integrating resources from various sectors.

This year's Computex Taipei is being held at the Taipei World Trade Center Nangang Exhibition Hall and the Taipei International Convention Center, with 1,602 exhibitors from 30 countries showcasing the latest smart home applications and solutions at 5,015 booths.

The five-day exhibition features six cutting-edge technology trends -- artificial intelligence, 5G wireless communication technology, Internet of Things, gaming and virtual reality, innovations and startups, and blockchain technology, according to the one of the organizers, Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA).

Last year, 40,000 foreign buyers and professionals attended the event, and this year's show is expected to attract more than that, TAITRA Chairman James Huang (黃志芳) said.

Meanwhile, Minister of Economic Affairs Shen Jong-chin (沈榮津) said at the opening ceremony that Computex Taipei is one of the world's largest information communications technology exhibitions and that with a comprehensive supply chain, Taiwan's ICT products are being sold worldwide.
