HTC to unveil flagship U12+ smartphone May 23

Taipei, May 3 (CNA) Taiwan's leading smartphone brand HTC Corp. announced Thursday that it will unveil its latest flagship model the U12+ on May 23, its first release since its smartphone design division was acquired by Google in January.

According to several tech news websites, the HTC U12+ is speculated to feature a 6-inch screen with an 18-to-9 ratio, a dual 12 and 16 megapixel lens camera on the back, a dual 8 megapixel lens camera on the front, and "Edge Sense," which will allow users to simply squeeze the phone to activate features such as the camera, Facebook, and other apps.

The phone, which will likely be powered by Qualcomm's advanced Snapdragon 845 processor, will have a 128 GB version that is expected to retail for NT$24,900 (US$838), the tech sites said.

The U12+ is HTC's first smartphone since the completion of a US$1.1 billion deal in January for the acquisition of its hardware design division by Google, which has raised anticipation for the new model in tech circles.

The launch of the U12+ has been timed months after the release of rival Android flagship phones to give it a longer sales cycle, tech industry sources said, adding that it likely to be HTC's only new premium model this year.

HTC has been suffering heavy financial losses due to stiff global competition.

In April, the company reported net losses of NT$16.91 billion for 2017, with a loss per share of NT$20.58, the highest since the company listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange in 2002.
