Taipei, April 16 (CNA) Asustek Computer Inc. and Acer Inc., two of Taiwan's leading personal computer brands, took fifth and sixth positions, respectively, in the worldwide PC shipment rankings for the first quarter of this year, while the two firms witnessed their shipments falling in the quarter, according to market information advisory firm Gartner Inc.

Citing a market research report, Gartner said Asustek took a 6.3 percent share of the global PC market by shipping 3.90 million PCs in the January-March period, down 12.5 percent from a year earlier.

Meanwhile, Acer shipped 3.82 million PCs for the first quarter to grab a 6.2 percent share. Acer's first-quarter shipments were down 8.6 percent from a year earlier, Gartner's data shows.

The rankings were unchanged from the fourth quarter of last year, but Asustek fell one notch from a year earlier, while Acer's position remained the same.

In the first quarter, worldwide PC shipments totaled 61.69 million units, down 1.4 percent from a year earlier, marking the 14th consecutive quarter of decline, Gartner said.

"The major contributor to the decline came from China, where unit shipments declined 5.7 percent year on year," Gartner's principal analyst Mikako Kitagawa said in a statement.

"This was driven by China's business market, where some state-owned and large enterprises postponed new purchases or upgrades, awaiting new policies and reassignment of officials after the early March session of the National People's Congress," the analyst said.

Kitagawa said inventory adjustments continued into the first quarter from the previous quarter, adding that due to the planned release of new models in the second quarter, market sentiment has become more cautious.

HP Inc. of the United States remained the world's largest PC supplier, shipping 12.86 million units in the first quarter, up 2.8 percent from a year earlier, to take a 20.8 percent share of the global market, Gartner said.

China's Lenovo Group Ltd. came in second, shipping 12.35 million PCs in the January-March period, up 0.3 percent from a year earlier, to take a 20.0 percent market share, Gartner added.

Dell Inc. and Apple Inc. of the U.S. ranked as the third and fourth largest PC suppliers, respectively, in the first quarter, shipping 9.88 million units and 4.26 million units to take a 16.0 percent share and a 6.9 percent share, according to the report.

In the first quarter, PC shipments in the U.S. market fell 2.9 percent from a year earlier to 11.80 million units, while shipments in the Asia-Pacific region also dropped 3.9 percent to 21.90 million units, the report said.
