Taiwan tech firms to showcase innovations at MWC

Barcelona, Feb. 26 (CNA) A group of Taiwanese high-tech firms will showcase their innovations at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018, scheduled to kick off in Barcelona, Spain Monday.

Among the local tech firms to participate in what is one of the largest mobile technology exhibitions in the world, smartphone vendor HTC Corp., which has entered the virtual reality business, will demonstrate its efforts in VR technology.

VR technology is among the major themes at the 2018 MWC, which will run through March 1, along with augmented reality, smartphones, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things and 5G technology.

The event, which will house 2,300 exhibitors from around the world with a theme of "Creating a Better Future," is expected to attract more than 100,000 visitors. The annual conference is perceived as one of the best indicators with regard to technology development.

HTC Chairwoman Cher Wang (王雪紅), whose company launched its first VR headset -- the HTC Vive --in the 2015 MWC, led an HTC delegation to the event this year. She will speak about HTC's VR development and how to create better content and media in the VR era.

In addition to HTC, Taiwanese PC brand Asustek Computer Inc. will also attend the exhibition, led by company chief executive officer Jerry Shen (沈振來). Asustek, which is keen to develop smartphones to diversify its sales sources, is expected to unveil the newest smartphone models -- the ZenFone 5 series -- and will put the devices on sale between March and May.

Asustek said it remains upbeat about its smartphone sales, expecting that shipments will rise 5 percent from a year earlier in 2018.

Joining the list of Taiwanese participants at the MWC, Chunghwa Telecom Co., one of Taiwan's leading telecom operators, will demonstrate its achievements in 5G development.

According to market information advisory firm Gartner, the global telecom industry is expected to intensify its efforts in 5G development. In addition to Chunghwa Telecom, many foreign brands such as Intel Corp., Qualcomm Inc., Ericsson and Huawei Technologies Co. are expected to showcase their 5G capabilities.

Chunghwa Telecom has said it will sign cooperation agreements with its foreign strategic partners during the MWC 2018 to boost its 5G strength.

On Sunday, South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. unveiled its latest flagship smartphone model Galaxy S9 series. Randy Lee (李元榮) of Samsung Taiwan, told CNA that the 5.8-inch Galaxy S9 and 6.2-inch S9+ are scheduled to go on sale in Taiwan March 16.
