Taipei, Jan. 24 (CNA) Taiwan remained among the top five markets in the world in 2017 for Google Play, the app store for the Android operating system, the director of Google Play Asia-Pacific said Wednesday.

James Sanders said the other countries that were included in the top five were Japan, South Korea, the United States and the United Kingdom.

Although he did not disclose the individual rankings of the countries, Sanders added that Taiwan has been among the top five for many years and that he is optimistic about the potential of Taiwanese developers.

Up to 81 percent of Taiwanese people use smartphones, and Taiwan's population has an average of 2.7 network devices per person, indicating that the mobile market is continuing to grow, he said.

Taiwanese people like to play mobile games, with 33 percent playing at least once a week, according to market research data, which also shows that Taiwan is ranked second in the Asia-Pacific region, closely following Vietnam's 36 percent.

Other countries that have a flourishing game market include South Korea, Japan, the U.S. and the U.K., at 24 percent, 19 percent, 17 percent and 11 percent, respectively, playing mobile games at least once a week, according to the market research.

However, Taiwanese developers have limited resources in application development, said Sanders.

Sanders explained that 56 percent of Taiwanese developers are self-taught, while only 2 percent have undergone tertiary courses, which are both lower relative to the global figures of 60 percent and 75 percent, respectively, according to an analysis of Taiwanese mobile app developers published by the Institute for Information Industry.

Google Play hopes to help Taiwanese developers by first introducing the latest technology and development tools through regular workshops and events to give developers better knowledge of Google Play's related policies and information, Sanders said.

Each year, Google Play will invite Taiwanese developers to attend its major annual developer conference -- Google I/O -- and will organize activities and gatherings to promote sharing, exchanges and learning.

Google Play will also assist Taiwanese developers with localized resources such as manuals written in traditional Mandarin Chinese, an online center and Google Play Console developer management tools.

Google Play has tried many ways to help more Taiwanese developers to be seen by more people, including setting up a "Made-in-Taiwan Corner" in the app store, media events and promotion of Taiwanese developers at the Taipei Game Show, Sanders said.

This year at the 2018 Taipei Game Show, Google for the first time will have an exclusive area for independent Taiwanese developers to showcase five games created by gifted developers. In addition, a large-scale Google Play Taiwan Developer Workshop will be held on the eve of the Taipei International Game Show, with over 150 local developers participating.

The 2018 Taipei Game Show will consist of two zones that will kick off Jan. 26 and run through Jan. 29 at the Taipei World Trade Center Exhibition Hall 1 for the business-to-consumer zone, while the business-to-business zone will start a day earlier and end on Jan. 26.
