Taipei, April 18 (CNA) The Ministry of Science and Technology on Tuesday unveiled a program to recruit overseas Taiwanese talent to return to their home country, offering a monthly stipend of NT$125,000 (US$4,110) for up to one year.

Science and Technology Minister Chen Liang-gee (陳良基) said the program is scheduled to kick off next month with the goal of persuading 100 Taiwanese doctoral degree holders to come back to Taiwan.

They must be Taiwanese, under 45 years of age, and the government will provide them with a monthly stipend of NT$125,000, giving them a similar living level overseas until they find jobs.

Chen said that according to an initial survey, around 60 percent of those who study overseas hope to return to work in Taiwan, and the unveiling of the program is aimed at removing hurdles to their return.

To help them settle down, science parks under the jurisdiction of the ministry will also provide rented dormitories.

The ministry will also help with the schooling of children of the overseas talent, and help them enroll in bilingual schools in the science parks, Chen said.

The program, which follows an earlier program in February to send Taiwanese doctors to Silicon Valley in the United States to take part in research and development programs, is aimed at injecting new momentum into the research and development of local scientific development and industrial innovation.
