Taipei, March 13 (CNA) Taiwan was listed in 19th place in a report on the Internet connection speed in countries worldwide in the fourth quarter of last year, according to content delivery network services provider Akamai Technologies, Inc.
In its report for the October-December period, Akamai said Taiwan's average connection speed was 15.6 megabits per second (Mbps), the fifth fastest in Asia and the 19th fastest worldwide.
The report compiled by Akamai Intelligent Platform included data on average connection speeds, broadband adoption rates and average mobile connection speed, the company said.
In the average mobile connection category, Taiwan's speed was 12.0 Mbps, also the fifth fastest in Asia, according to the report.
Taiwan showed improvement in the average Internet connection speed compared with the previous quarter but the country dropped one notch in the overall rankings in the fourth quarter, the report said.
The countries with the fastest average Internet connection speed worldwide were South Korea (26.1 Mbps), Norway (23.6 Mbps) and Sweden (22.8 Mbps), the report showed.
In the Asia Pacific region, the top four after South Korea, were Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan and Taiwan.
Taiwan was also among eight regional countries or administrative areas that registered average connection speeds of more than 10 Mbps, and its broadband adoption rate was 33 percent, which was 2 percentage points higher than in the third quarter of last year, according to the report.
The other countries or administrative areas in the region with average connection speeds of more than 10 Mbps were South Korea, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, New Zealand and Australia, the report indicated.
The global average connection speed was 7.0 Mbps, which was an improvement from the previous quarter, according to the report.
In the category of average mobile connection speed, the United Kingdom topped the rankings with 26.9 Mbps, while Venezuela was at the bottom with 2.9 Mbps, the report showed.
