Taipei, Nov. 27 (CNA) Godfrey Gao (高以翔), 35, a Canadian- Taiwanese actor, was confirmed dead by his entertainment agency after collapsing while participating in a variety show in China Wednesday.

Gao collapsed and his heart stopped beating for about three minutes during filming for his appearance on action variety show "Chase Me" produced by Zhejiang Satellite TV in Ningbo early Wednesday morning.

Gao was rushed to hospital and underwent emergency treatment for almost three hours, but doctors were unable to resuscitate him and he was officially pronounced dead, according to JetStar, his agency.

The cause of the actor's death remains unclear.

In "Chase Me," which started broadcasting earlier this month, guests are divided into two teams and compete on various missions.

Gao's death, JetStar said in a statement, "has stunned us and made us very sad. It is hard to accept what has happened."

JetStar expressed gratitude to Gao's fans and news outlets that expressed their condolences, noting that company representatives and colleagues were by his side before his family arrived in Ningbo after receiving the news.

"Please note the sadness and grief Godfrey's family is suffering right now and do not bother them," JetStar said, "We will do everything we can to help them deal with the aftermath of his death in as low-key a manner as possible."

Gao, a Canadian-Taiwanese, was born in Taipei in September 1984 to a Taiwanese father and Malaysian mother, and has two elder brothers. Gao was educated in Canada and earned a bachelor's degree before returning to Taiwan to pursue a career in entertainment in 2004.

Recently, he had been very active in entertainment circles in China.

In recent years, several participants on action variety shows in China have been injured.

Among them, Wu Mochou (吳莫愁), a Chinese singer who fell over and suffered concussion while on a show called "Trump Card" in January 2016, which was also produced by Zhejiang Satellite TV.

Zhang Jie (張杰), another Chinese singer, was injured after being deprived of oxygen when competing on the same variety show in March 2018.

Gao's death sparked an outcry among Chinese netizens, who urged Zhejiang Satellite TV to pay more attention to the safety of participants on its action variety shows in a bid to prevent another tragedy.
