Taipei, Oct. 10 (CNA) A Vietnamese fishing ship caught poaching in Taiwan's exclusive economic zone was fined NT$1 million (US$32,530) before being expelled from the country's waters, the Fisheries Agency (FA) said Thursday.

According to an FA statement, the Vietnamese fishing boat -- identified as BD.97277.TS -- was found to be operating illegally 127 nautical miles southwest of Taiwan's southernmost point of Eluanbi by two coast guard vessels Oct. 2.

After detaining the five-member crew for questioning and examining video footage collected by coast guard officers, the boat was determined to have been poaching within Taiwan's exclusive economic zone, the FA said.

In line with the law, the captain of the fishing boat, which had a catch of 40 longtail tuna and 40 mahi mahi when it was apprehended, was fined NT$1 million before the boat was escorted out of Taiwanese waters, the FA said.

It was the third Vietnamese fishing ship to be fined NT$1 million for poaching in Taiwan's exclusive economic zone since 2016, according to FA tallies.
