Singer-songwriter Hush to headline LGBT Pride parade

Taipei, Oct. 5 (CNA) Singer-songwriter and LGBT+ activist Hush (陳家偉) will be the headline performer at this year's LGBT Pride parade in Taipei on Oct. 26, the event's organizer, the Taiwan Tongzhi Hotline Association (台灣同志諮詢熱線協會), said Friday.

Speaking at a press conference held by the association, Hush admitted to being initially wary of accepting the role.

Eventually, however, he saw serving as Rainbow Ambassador during a period of increasing awareness of LGBT+ issues and in the first year of marriage equality in Taiwan as a great honor.

Organizers are expecting around 200,000 marchers this year, far exceeding the 2018 attendance, which was estimated at 130,000, for what has become the largest LGBT+ Pride event in Asia, event coordinator Cheng Chi-wei (鄭智偉) said at the press conference.

Due to the special significance of this year's parade, the first since marriage equality legislation took effect in May, Cheng said his organization chose the theme "Together, Make Taiwan Better" to encourage solidarity with the general public and normalize LGBT+ identities in Taiwanese society.

Cheng said that in spite of its recent successes, the LGBT+ movement has more work to do in building connections with other sectors of society to overcome remaining areas of discrimination.

The 2019 Taiwan LGBT Pride parade will convene at noon on Oct. 26 at Taipei City Hall Plaza, before departing at 1 p.m. and proceeding toward the Presidential Office Building on Ketagalan Boulevard, covering a total distance of 5.4 kilometers. (Wu Hsin-yun, Wang Yu-ning, and Matthew Mazzetta)
