Magnitude 4.8 quake rocks eastern Taiwan

Taipei, May 23 (CNA) A magnitude 4.8 earthquake jolted eastern Taiwan at 2:12 p.m. Thursday, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) reported that day.

The epicenter of the quake was located about 6.3 kilometers west of Hualien County Hall at a depth of 14.3 km, the bureau's Seismology Center said.

The quake's intensity, which gauges the actual effect of a temblor, was highest in the Taroko scenic area, where it measured 5 on Taiwan's 7-tier intensity scale.

Several other areas in Hualien and Nantou also recorded an intensity of 4.
