Magnitude 4.6 earthquake jolts eastern Taiwan

Taipei, March 14 (CNA) An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.6 on the Richter scale shook eastern Taiwan at 5:07 a.m. Thursday, according to the Central Weather Bureau.

The epicenter of the temblor was about 38.9 kilometers north northeast of Taitung County Hall, at a depth of 17.1 km, the bureau's Seismology Center said.

The earthquake's highest intensity, which gauges the actual effect of a temblor, was highest in Taitung County, where it measured 5 on Taiwan's 7-tier intensity scale.

The quake also measured an intensity of 2 in the eastern county of Hualien, central city of Taichung and southern city of Kaohsiung., the bureau said.
