Magnitude 5.3 quake rocks eastern Taiwan

Taipei, Jan. 8 (CNA) A magnitude 5.3 earthquake jolted eastern Taiwan at 8:16 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

The epicenter of the quake was located at sea about 66.7 kilometers northeast of Taitung County Hall at a depth of 33.9 km, the bureau's Seismology Center said.

The earthquake's intensity, which gauges the actual effect of a temblor, was highest in Taitung's Changbin Township, where it measured 4 on Taiwan's 7-tier intensity scale.

Several other areas in Changhua, Hualien and Taichung also recorded an intensity of 3.
