Sporadic showers forecast Monday for northern Taiwan

Taipei, Nov. 5 (CNA) Sporadic rain is expected to continue in northern Taiwan on Monday, while the weather in the rest of the country will range from sunny to cloudy skies, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

In Taipei, Keelung, Yilan and other northern coastal areas, brief showers will continue throughout the day as northeasterly winds strengthen, the bureau said.

Due to the rain, temperatures in northern Taiwan will be lower than in other parts of the country, with daytime highs rising to no more than 27 degrees Celsius, the CWB said.

Elsewhere in Taiwan, cloudy to sunny skies can be expected, with daytime temperatures of 28-29 degrees in eastern areas and 31 degrees in the central and southern regions, the bureau said.

However, the mercury will drop sharply at night, the bureau said, forecasting lows of 20-22 degrees in northern Taiwan and 21-23 degrees in the southern half of the country.

The bureau also warned of low visibility in Chiayi due to muggy atmospheric conditions in central and southern Taiwan, which will last until Thursday.

Drivers in Chiayi are urged to exercise caution, the CWB said.

Meanwhile, the air quality in parts of the country was expected to be good to fair on Monday, but the Air Quality Index (AQI) was flashing an "orange alert" in Yunlin, Chiayi, Tainan and the offshore Kinmen County, indicating unhealthy levels for sensitive groups, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Due to a lack of wind to disperse atmospheric pollutants, the air quality in Kaohsiung and Pingtung was unhealthy for the general public, as indicated by the AQI "red alert," the EPA said.
