Taipei, Nov. 4 (CNA) A Pokemon Go event in Tainan has attracted large crowds of players to the southern city since it began last Thursday at the Tainan Metropolitan Park and the Chimei Museum.

The city government, which co-organized the five-day event, estimated the Pokemon Go Safari Zone in Tainan would draw 300,000 people, but more than 550,000 players showed up during its first three days, Tainan tourism official Ting Ling-li (丁玲琍) said Sunday.

They were there to hunt for imaginary monsters, including extremely rare Pokemons, including a rare version representing Tainan, that are color variants of standard Pokemons.

Among the Pokemon Go aficionados was famous young vlogger Pierre Liu (劉沛), who made a splash when he appeared at the Tainan Metropolitan Park on Sunday afternoon, with many of his fans scrambling to take pictures with him.

Liu said he decided to attend and capture the festivities on video because it was the first time Niantic Inc., which developed Pokemon Go with Nintendo Co. and Pokemon Co., was holding an international event for the mobile app game in Taiwan.

Among the most notable players was Chen San-yuan (陳三元), a 70-year-old man who traveled from New Taipei to Tainan on Saturday with 15 cellphones and nine portable power chargers. His equipment, weighing a total of 9 kilograms, drew the attention of many there.

The event concludes on Monday.
