Magnitude 4.4 quake rocks northeastern Taiwan

Taipei, Oct. 10 (CNA) A magnitude 4.4 earthquake jolted northeastern Taiwan at 5:43 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

The epicenter of the quake was located at sea about 36.4 kilometers east of Yilan County Hall at a depth of 13.7 km, the bureau's Seismology Center said.

The earthquake's intensity, which gauges the actual effect of a temblor, was highest in Gongliao District in New Taipei and Toucheng Township in Yilan, where it measured 3 on Taiwan's 7-tier intensity scale.

Several other areas in Yilan, Taipei, New Taipei, Hualien and Taoyuan recorded an intensity of 1.
