Donggang-Liuqiu ferry services to be suspended due to typhoon

Taipei, Sept. 14 (CNA) Affected by the periphery of Typhoon Mangkhut, ferry services between Donggang and Liuqiu Township in Pingtung County will be suspended from Saturday noon, according to the ferry operators.

Ferry services were operating normally Friday, but will be halted between the two destinations from noon Saturday due to an expected increase of wind and strong precipitation during the passage of the typhoon on its way to the Philippines, the operators said.

Hotels in Liuqiu Township, a coral island off Pingtung County, said many clients had canceled their room bookings for the weekend due to the weather conditions.

The Central Weather Bureau has issued a sea warning for Mangkhut, which was located 680 kilometers off southeastern Taiwan as of 5 p.m.

Waves as high as 5-6 meters were reported in coastal areas of southeastern Taiwan such as Kenting, Eluanbi and Hengchun in Pingtung County, due to strengthening wind.

As the violent storm was expected to begin to affect these coastal areas from Friday evening, schools and offices on outlying Orchid Island off Taitung County were closed from Friday noon.

The southern port city of Kaohsiung, meanwhile, had stepped up its anti-disaster efforts with the approach of Mangkhut. The typhoon was forecast to come closest to Taiwan from Friday night into Saturday.

The Port of Kaohsiung has set up a disaster emergency response center, while the city's Marine Bureau has urged Taiwanese fishing boats operating in waters off southeastern Taiwan, the Bashi Channel and the Pratas Islands to take precautions.
