Taiwan issues sea warning for Typhoon Mangkhut

Taipei, Sept. 14 (CNA) The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) issued a sea warning for Typhoon Mangkhut Friday, reversing its previous forecast that there was little chance of a sea warning because the storm had moved further south than expected.

The typhoon, moving west northwest at a speed of 25 kilometers per hour, was located 840 kilometers southeast of Hengchun in southern Taiwan, the CWB said in its latest typhoon update issued at 11:30 a.m. Friday.

Typhoon Mangkhut is packing sustained winds of 209 kph, with gusts of up to 263 kph, according to the bureau.

The storm will pass closest to Taiwan on Saturday and with its 300km radius poses an ongoing threat to marine activities off southeastern Taiwan with strong winds and high waves, the weather bureau said.

It added that the storm's periphery is expected to bring heavy rain to southern and southeastern areas of Taiwan.
