Rain forecast for southern Taiwan on Friday

Taipei, Aug. 10 (CNA) Southern Taiwan can expect rain on Friday as a cloud system moves northward, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

CWB forecaster Lin Ting-yi (林定宜) said the cloud system will destabilize the weather in the south as well as the Hengchun Peninsula to some extent, bringing occasional showers and thunderstorms into Saturday. Across the rest of the country, sunny skies will prevail Friday, he said.

Meanwhile, temperatures will range between 24 and 34 degrees Celsius in southern Taiwan, 26-34 degrees in the central areas, and 27-36 in the north, Lin said.

The CWB has issued an orange temperature alert for some northern areas where the temperature is likely to soar past 36 degrees, namely Taipei, New Taipei, Miaoli, Yilan, and Hualien, and a yellow alert for Taoyuan.

Under the CWB's new color-coded high temperature warning system, an orange light means expected temperatures of more than 38 degrees in a single day or above 36 degrees for three or more consecutive days, while a yellow light signals temperatures higher than 36 degrees for a single day.

Lin said many parts of Taiwan will also be exposed to dangerously high levels of ultraviolet radiation around midday Friday and people should take precautions if they have to go outdoors.

He also warned of high seas along the western coast over the next few days, and fishing boats in the area should exercise caution.

As of 9:30 a.m. Friday, Tropical Storm Yagi was 800-900 kilometers east of Taipei and was moving toward Okinawa, Japan, Lin said, adding the storm is unlikely to affect Taiwan. (By Chen Wei-ting and Frances Huang)
