Scorching heat forecast to continue Tuesday

Taipei, Aug. 7 (CNA) High temperatures are expected to continue around Taiwan on Tuesday under the ongoing influence of a high pressure system in the Pacific.

Central Weather Bureau (CWB) forecaster Cheng Chuan-fang (程川芳) said warm air is still moving in from the north, which will result in daytime temperatures of 33-36 degrees Celsius around Taiwan.

Temperatures in northern Taiwan, Yilan and Hualien counties in the east, and Kaohsiung in the south could even top 36 degrees, Cheng said.

Under the 24 solar terms of the traditional Chinese calendar, Tuesday marks the beginning of autumn and the start of gradually falling temperatures, Cheng said, but the weather is defying traditional wisdom because of the high pressure system's strength.

Though sunny skies dominate the forecast for Tuesday, sporadic thundershowers or even brief heavy downpours are possible in mountainous parts of Taiwan and in low-lying areas in central and southern Taiwan, especially in the afternoon, Cheng said.

He said many parts of Taiwan will also be exposed to dangerously high levels of ultraviolet radiation around the middle of the day Tuesday, and urged people who need to spend time outdoors to take the necessary precautions.

Looking ahead, Cheng said the recent weather pattern will continue for a few more days, but rainfall is expected for southern Taiwan on Thursday, which will bring temperatures down.

Taiwan will not be affected by Typhoon Shanshan, which continues to move toward Japan, but a tropical depression has formed east of the Philippines, and it remains to be seen if it will affect Taiwan, the forecaster said.
