5 injured due to Typhoon Maria

Taipei, July 11 (CNA) Five people were injured as Typhoon Maria passed over northern Taiwan late Tuesday and early Wednesday, according to the latest information on the storm issued by the Central Emergency Operation Center.

The center did not provide any details on the nature of the injuries or where they occurred.

The statistics also showed that a total of 131,774 households around Taiwan lost power because of the storm, and 13,754 households were still without electricity as of 12:23 p.m. Wednesday.

A total of 3,438 people left their homes before the storm as a precautionary measure and 1,001 people were still in shelters, the center's figures showed.

Although the typhoon has left Taiwan, the center said rough waves are still expected along Taiwan's northern coast into Wednesday afternoon, and it urged people not to engage in seaside activities.

The outlying Lienchiang County in the Taiwan Strait, not far from China's coastline, continues to be affected by Typhoon Maria, the center said, and warned residents they could still face powerful gusts.

According to the Central Weather Bureau, the typhoon made landfall in Fujian Province in China at 9 a.m. Wednesday.
