Taipei, March 13 (CNA) Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) said Tuesday that it will upgrade its ticketing system this year to include new features, including a seat selection option for passengers buying tickets online.

Peng Kun-yen (彭坤炎), head of the TRA's information management center, told reporters that the fourth-generation ticketing system will be established in May and will be tested from June to September.

By the end of the year, the main feature of the first stage upgrade -- online seat selection - will become available, Peng said.

It will also open up more reservations and allow the online purchase of TRA Bento (box meals) and other products, he added.

In the second stage of upgrades, passengers who buy online tickets will be able to print or download the tickets to their smartphones, Peng said.

Noting that there are currently 17 TRA stations that allow entry with QR codes, he said the number of such stations will be increased to accept either paper tickets or electronic tickets that carry a QR code.

In addition, TRA is considering expanding the seat reservation period from the current two weeks to about two months before the scheduled travel date, he said.

The TRA's fourth generation ticketing system, which includes both hardware and software upgrades, is a NT$1.07 billion (US$36.6 million) undertaking that began in May 2016.

The system reportedly will be able to process 600,000 transactions per minute, compared with the current 160,000 transactions per minute.
