Bangkok, Feb. 13 (CNA) Two Taiwanese men were detained by Thai police in northern Thailand Sunday for holding forged travel documents while trying to cross the border from Myanmar into Thailand, Taiwan's representative office in Thailand confirmed Tuesday.

According to Thai police, the two Taiwanese men, identified only as Huang and Chen, first entered Thailand Friday and then proceeded to Myanmar. They were caught by Thai police for possessing doctored entry papers when seeking to re-enter Thailand in a car at the Mae Sai checkpoint at the Thailand-Myanmar border Sunday.

Another man from Myanmar traveling with the two Taiwanese men was also arrested, said Thai police who accused the Myanmarese man of trying to bribe them.

Thai police said they suspect that a criminal ring doing document forgery might be involved in the case and that they have launched an investigation.

The two Taiwanese men have criminal records, Thai police said, noting that they have informed Taiwan's representative office in Bangkok of the matter.
