Record low temperatures of season reported Thursday

Taipei, Jan. 11 (CNA) Temperatures in Taiwan dipped to new record lows for the season as a cold air mass continued to bring dry, cold weather to the country, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said Thursday.

Earlier in the day, temperatures in New Taipei's Tamsui District fell further than it did in the past couple of days to 7.5 degrees Celsius, the lowest recorded in Taiwan's low-lying areas this winter.

Three other weather stations recorded winter lows for their respective regions, including 8.6 degrees in New Taipei's Banqiao District, 9.2 degrees in Chiayi and 9.6 degrees in Taipei.

With very little moisture in the air, sunny to cloudy skies are forecast throughout Taiwan, with brighter skies in all regions, according to CWB forecaster Liu Pei-teng (劉沛滕).

As temperatures continue to dip, the CWB will be issuing low temperature warnings, covering areas north of Kaohsiung as well as the outlying counties of Kinmen and Lianjiang.

The cold air mass will weaken from Jan. 13, which will see a return of warmer temperatures, with chances of reaching above 20 degrees throughout the country.
