Magnitude 4.5 earthquake strikes off eastern Taiwan

Taipei, Nov. 12 (CNA) A magnitude 4.5 earthquake jolted off eastern Taiwan at 6:54 a.m. Sunday, according to the Central Weather Bureau.

The quake, which occurred under the sea about 77.1 kilometers, was located 28.3 km east of Yilan County Hall, bureau officials said.

The earthquake's highest intensity, which gauges the actual effect of a temblor, was recorded in Yilan County's Guishan Island, where it measured 3 on Taiwan's 7-tier intensity scale.

The earthquake measured an intensity of 2 in Taoyuan's Zhongli and an intensity of 1 was felt in Yilan City, New Taipei, Taipei and Hsinchu City and Hualien County's Heping, bureau data showed.
