Taipei, Oct. 12 (CNA) A tropical depression east of the Philippines has become this year's 20th tropical storm, the Central Weather Bureau said Thursday.

As of 8 p.m. Thursday, the tropical storm named Khanun was 460 km southeast of Eluanbi, Taiwan's southernmost tip, moving in a westerly direction. It is forecast to later move in a west-northwesterly direction.

The bureau said showers may be common in northern, eastern and southern Taiwan with extremely heavy rain possible in some parts of eastern Taiwan before Sunday, although the tropical storm is not expected to hit the country.
