Chang Guann chairman attempts suicide

Kaohsiung, Sept. 14 (CNA) Chang Guann Co. Chairman Yeh Wen-hsiang (葉文祥) was rushed to Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital for emergency treatment Thursday after drinking acid-based detergent in an apparent suicide attempt.

He was later reported to be in stable condition, Kaohsiung police said, adding that he was taken to the hospital by his family when they discovered his suicide attempt.

Yeh was not at his home in Kaohsiung when he attempted suicide, according to the police.

Yeh, an oil producer who sold lard made from recycled waste oils for human consumption, was sentenced Wednesday to 22 years in jail, with five years commutable to a fine, by the Supreme Court on charges of 285 counts of violating the Act Governing Food Safety and Sanitation and aggravated fraud for his role in a 2014 food scandal that rocked the whole country.

His sentence is the highest-ever in Taiwan's history involving tainted food scare cases.
