Man jumps off train platform at Taipei Main Station

Taipei, Aug. 13 (CNA) A man suddenly jumped off a train platform at the Taipei Main Station late Sunday morning and was hit by a train as it was pulling in to the station, and had no vital signs after being taken to the hospital.

The man, who suddenly jumped to the tracks from the station's No. 3 platform at 11:19 a.m., was hit by a southbound Chu-Kuang Express passenger train as it arrived along the platform.

The wounded man, estimated to be around 50, was quickly sent to the nearby National Taiwan University Hospital for treatment, but was found to have no vital signs upon arrival, Taipei fire fighters said.

The authorities offered few details about the man or whether he was trying to commit suicide, but they did confirm that he suffered multiple fractures to bones in his limbs and ribs.

Railway police are now investigating the case.

The man's action disrupted the schedule of four trains and affected more than 1,300 passengers, according to the Taiwan Railway Administration.

The traffic at Taipei Main Station returned to normal at around 11:50 a.m. after being delayed for about 20 minutes. Some of the passengers on board the Chu-Kuang Express were put on other trains, the TRA said.
