Taipei, May 16 (CNA) A total of 89.4 kilograms of narcotics were dumped into a garbage incinerator in Taipei's Mucha District on Tuesday during an annual destruction of illegal drugs conducted by the Investigation Bureau.

The drugs were seized by the bureau in various operations over the past year.

An estimated 17 different types of drugs, including heroin, marijuana and cocaine, were destroyed in the ceremony, which was officiated over by Justice Minister Chiu Tai-san (邱太三).

Speaking at the event, Chiu said the government plans to adopt a more human-centric strategy to fight the spread of narcotics in the country.

In the past, anti-narcotics efforts were mainly focused on drug seizures, but efforts in addiction prevention will also be enhanced in the future, he said.

According to the justice minister, a database that integrates information held by prosecutors, police and investigators will also be established to make it easier to identify the sources of narcotics, including the suppliers.
