Two Taiwanese, six Chinese nabbed for telecom fraud in Bangkok

Bangkok, May 16 (CNA) A telecom fraud ring comprised of two Taiwanese and six Chinese suspects was busted in Bangkok May 9 under a joint operation by Thai and Taiwanese police, the Thailand Immigration Bureau said Tuesday.

Immigration Bureau Chief Natthorn Phraohsunthorn said the Thai and Taiwanese police have been working together closely, especially in crackdowns on illegal activities such as telecom fraud.

The Thai police have been acting on the principle of "good guy in, bad guy out" to pick up criminals and kick them out of the country, he said, meaning that the Thai authorities welcome law-abiding visitors but will not tolerate foreign criminals.

At a news conference held at the residence rented by the ring to carry out their telecom fraud, the bureau also had the six Chinese -- four men and two women -- demonstrate how they swindled Chinese people by posing as law enforcement officers.

The ring is believed to have collected more than 1 million Chinese yuan (US$145,144) from their victims in China.

The two Taiwanese suspects bowed their heads and refused to answer any questions from the media.
