Enterovirus season expected to start in late April

Taipei, April 18 (CNA) This year's enterovirus season in Taiwan will start around the end of April, about a month later than usual, the Centers for Disease Control said Tuesday.

The number of cases in the week April 9-15 was 2,789, lower than usual for that time of year, the CDC said, citing data pertaining to the number of enterovirus patients that sought treatment at outpatient clinics and in emergency rooms.

CDC Deputy Director-General Philip Lo (羅一鈞) forecast that the number of cases will begin to climb between late April and early May, and will peak before the start of summer.

He warned parents to be on guard, saying that children under the age of five are one of the high risk groups for severe enterovirus.

So far this year, 11 cases of enterovirus 71 (EV71) infections have been recorded, all mild, while there has been one serious case of Coxsackie A2 virus infection, the CDC said, citing data valid as of April 17.

The number of serious enterovirus cases in Taiwan last year was 33.
