Taipei, April 18 (CNA) A Taiwanese national was found carrying 30 million Japanese yen (US$275,000) in cash at Taiwan's main international airport without declaring it, and had most of the money seized by customs authorities, Taipei Customs said Tuesday.
The woman arrived at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport via Peach Aviation, a Japanese budget air carrier, at around 9:30 a.m. on Monday, and an undeclared 30 million Japanese yen was found in her luggage.
Customs officials returned an equivalent of US$10,000 to the woman and seized the remaining 28.91 million Japanese yen.
According to the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act, passengers or crew members must declare the cash they are bringing into or out of the country if it exceeds NT$100,000, US$10,000 or 20,000 Chinese yuan.
People who do not declare cash above those amounts or who give a false declaration are subject to having any cash above the regulated amounts seized.
