Four Taiwanese arrested in drug bust

Taipei, Dec. 29 (CNA) One of Taiwan's most notorious drug-trafficking rings was busted by police on Thursday, according to Taiwan's Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB).

Four suspects, who were operating the drug ring out of Yunlin County in central Taiwan, were arrested during a raid by the police, the bureau said.

It said the police seized 32.95 grams of heroin, 25.5 grams of methamphetamine and NT$357,500 (US$11,070) in cash.

The drug bust was the result of joint efforts by Taiwan and Thailand law enforcement after information was obtained that a drug lord surnamed Wu was planning to bring a shipment of drugs into Taiwan, according to the CIB.

On Sept. 29, Thai police arrested one of Wu's accomplices in Pattaya, Thailand, who had stashed a quantity of drugs that was concealed in souvenirs at a gift shop in the resort city.

The CIB said that if the drug trafficking ring had not been busted, it would have caused serious disruption of social order in Taiwan and countries in Southeast Asia.
