Terry Gou calls on supporters to vote wisely in legislative elections

Taipei, Sept. 28 (CNA) Terry Gou (郭台銘), founder of Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., called on his supporters Saturday to cast their votes wisely in the 2020 legislative elections.

Gou made the comments while addressing supporters at a gathering held at the Syntrend Creative Park in Taipei.

In his speech, he also apologized for giving up his intention to run for president in January next year.

Instead, Gou asked that his supporters turn their attention to the Legislative Yuan, and help vote only the most suitable candidates into office.

According to Gou, many of the budgets passed by the Legislature are out of sync with today's needs and fail to improve the livelihoods of the people.

As to who are the ideal candidates, the former Hon Hai chairman said they would need to have knowledge of the economy and would not be running just for the sake of serving the purpose of their political party.

They would have to be innovative, able to look after the people's livelihoods, socially just, and able to help narrow the rich-poor divide, he added.

Ideally, the candidates would also need to be pragmatic and rational and would not stir up populism in order to win votes, Gou said.

Tsai Chin-yu (蔡沁瑜), one of Gou's aides, told reporters after the gathering that the tycoon will always serve the interests of the Republic of China.

Asked if Gou will be willing to support legislative candidates from the opposition Kuomintang (KMT), Tsai said he will show his public support for anyone who shares his vision, regardless of his or her political affiliation.

Commenting on rumors that Gou will stand for a poster shot with legislative candidates from the Taiwan People's Party (TPP) established by Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) in August, she confirmed that the event has been initially set for Oct. 2.

But that date could change, because it is yet to be decided who will run for the TPP, Tsai said.

It is no secret that Gou and Ko have been working as a team for some time now, she added.

Gou, who lost the KMT's presidential primary to Kaohsiung Mayor Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜) in July, withdrew from the party earlier this month.
