Taipei, Sept. 12 (CNA) Terry Gou (郭台銘), founder of Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. and an honorary member of the major opposition party, the Kuomintang (KMT), has decided to withdraw from the KMT, effective immediately, his aide said Thursday.

"Gou made the decision because the KMT prioritizes partisan gains ahead of national interests, which runs counter to his original desire to join the party," Tsai Chin-yu (蔡沁瑜), Gou's aide, told reporters.

The move signals a formal break with the party that has been struggling to unite its presidential primary candidates and prevent an internal split ahead of next year's presidential and legislative elections.

Gou's departure came after months of speculation that he will run as an independent in the 2020 presidential election after losing the KMT's presidential primary race to Kaohsiung Mayor Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜) in July.

Gou's aides have previously said that the business tycoon will make a decision on whether to run by Sept. 17, the deadline for registration as a presidential candidate.
