Taipei, August 6 (CNA) New Guatemalan ambassador to Taiwan Willy Alberto Gómez Tirado presented his letter of credence to President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) Monday, according to the Presidential Office.

In remarks, Tsai extended a sincere welcome to the ambassador and expressed hope that Taiwan-Guatemala relations will continue to grow.

Over the past three years, Taiwan and Guatemala have become closer in such areas as healthcare, education and agriculture as a result of reciprocal visits by heads of state and high-level officials, Tsai said.

Guatemalan coffee has been warmly welcomed in Taiwan, she noted, adding that coffee imports from the central American country hit a record high of more than US$12 million last year.

In addition, Tsai noted that Ambassador Gómez has founded a number of enterprises and has a background in education, technology and business.

Hopefully, the Ambassador will be able to tap into his knowledge and experience to give new impetus to bilateral relations, the president added.
