Taipei, Aug. 1 (CNA) Germany's new top envoy to Taiwan Thomas Prinz officially assumed office on Monday, his office said Wednesday.

"Dear friends in Taiwan, on July 30, 2018, I have assumed office as the new director general of the German Institute," Prinz was quoted as saying in a statement posted on the institute's website.

"I look forward to cooperating with our Taiwanese and foreign partners as well as with the other German organizations in Taiwan," he said.

He is taking over from Martin Eberts, who left Taipei last week after four years as head of the institute, the de facto German embassy in Taiwan. Prinz, who is expected to serve for at least four years in Taiwan, was Germany's ambassador to Bangladesh from 2015 to 2018.

Born in 1959 in Wetzlar, Germany, he received a PhD at University of Heidelberg's South Asia Institute. He is married and has five children, according to the office.
