Taipei, June 10 (CNA) The United States Department of State on Sunday said the dedication of the American Institute in Taiwan's (AIT) new building in Taipei marks "a milestone that reflects the importance of the U.S.-Taiwan partnership."

Heather Nauert, spokesperson for the Department of State, said in a congratulatory message to the AIT that through the AIT, the U.S. and Taiwan share values and enjoy close cooperation on a wide range of regional and global issues.

The AIT represents U.S. interests in Taiwan in the absence of official diplomatic ties. Since 1979, Washington has switched its diplomatic recognition of Taipei to Beijing but has maintained close ties with Taiwan based on its Taiwan Relations Act.

Meanwhile, Marie Royce, assistant secretary of educational and cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, is currently in Taiwan to participate in the dedication ceremony, scheduled for June 12, for the AIT's new office complex in Taipei's Neihu District.

The new building best represents the progress in bilateral ties made over the past years, but it will not officially begin operations until early September, the AIT said.
