Nigeria Trade Office in Taipei set to relocate this month

Taipei, March 8 (CNA) Nigeria's representative office in Taipei said Thursday that it plans to move to New Taipei before the end of March, but it did not give any details about the exact location.

The office said that once the new location and date have been confirmed, it will inform Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), which requested the move.

Meanwhile, MOFA spokesman Andrew Lee (李憲章) said the Nigeria Trade Office in Taiwan, as it is named, has received a directive from the Nigerian government to start the relocation as soon as possible.

MOFA issued a formal diplomatic note in January, requesting the relocation of the Taipei-based Nigeria Trade Office in Taiwan, after Taiwan received a similar demand for its office in the African country to be moved out of the capital.

MOFA said it completed the relocation of Taiwan's representative office in Nigeria from the capital Abuja to Lagos on Dec. 8, 2017.

The relocation was carried out in line with the Nigerian government's demands in January 2017, reportedly under pressure from China to show adherence to the "one China" policy.

The Nigerian government also requested that Taiwan's representative office reduce its staff and change its name to remove the title "Republic of China (Taiwan)."

After its relocation, the Taiwan office was renamed the Taipei Trade Office in the Federal Republic of Nigeria and it reopened in January.
