Taipei, Sept. 8 (CNA) Newly sworn-in Chairman Lin Feng-jeng (林峯正) of the Ill-gotten Party Assets Settlement Committee stated Friday that he is planning to phase out the committee.

"My biggest wish is to phase out the Ill-gotten Party Assets Settlement Committee, because I hope there will no longer be a need for it in the future," Lin said in a speech at the handover ceremony.

The new chairman explained his wish to reporters, saying that the committee was founded to carry out a specific mission -- that of handling ill-gotten party assets to promote reform and justice -- so if the committee can successfully carry out its task, then there will be no need for it in the future.

In response to speculation that the committee, under Lin's leadership, will persecute certain individuals involved in cases of ill-gotten party assets, Lin stated that the responsibility of the committee is only to gather evidence and make decisions based on the Act Governing the Handling of Ill-gotten Properties by Political Parties and their Affiliate Organizations, which he said does not constitute persecution.
