Taipei, May 18 (CNA) Vice President Chen Chien-jen (陳建仁) on Thursday expressed hope for closer ties and cooperation between Taiwan and the Vatican, during a meeting with Cardinal Lorenzo Baldisseri, secretary general of the Synod of Bishops at the Presidential Office in Taipei.

Chen said he hopes Taiwan will deepen cooperation and partnership with the Holy See to jointly advance freedom, democracy, human rights and universal love around the world.

Chen also said he was pleased that the Federation of Asian Bishops' Conference's (FABC) regional meeting was being held in Taiwan from May 15-19 and hoped it was a success.

The vice president invited Cardinal Baldisseri to experience first hand religious freedom and democracy in Taiwan and the hospitality of Taiwanese people.

Cardinal Baldisseri has had a rich diplomatic career, having previously served as apostolic nuncio to Haiti, Paraguay, India, Nepal and Brazil. He was appointed secretary of both the Congregation for Bishops and College of Cardinals in 2012, and promoted to the rank of Cardinal-Deacon in 2014.
