Taipei, March 13 (CNA) President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) on Monday visited Taiwan Rolling Stock Co. (TRSC) in Hsinchu County, the country's first railroad car manufacturer.

Noting that TRSC is the only rolling stock company with assembly and manufacture capability in Taiwan, Tsai expressed hope that the company will help inject more vitality into the country's economy.

She said Taiwan, which did not have a metro system until the 1990s, is relatively slow in its railway development.

To date, four cities around Taiwan have or will have their own metro systems, including the Taoyuan Metro system that was finally launched last month after numerous difficulties, she pointed out.

She said the government has listed rail transport as one of the key items in its infrastructure development plan and will work out an overall strategy to develop the rail transport industry as its next step.

According to TRSC Chairman Tsai Huang-liang (蔡煌瑯), building railroad cars domestically can reduce the purchase, operation and maintenance costs of Taiwan's rail transport systems and encourage upstream and downstream suppliers to invest in research, development and production, which will help retain capital in Taiwan, enhance competition in the industry and create jobs.

He said that in the future, TRSC is planning to vie for contracts to build railroad cars for Southeast Asian countries to help promote the government's "new southbound policy."
